High pressure metal halide gas discharge lamps with sodium and scandium metals in the arc discharge to complement the spectral radiation of mercury. The arc tube is enclosed in either a clear or phosphor-coated hard glass outer bulb.
Metal halide lamps operate on the same principle as all gas-discharge lamps. The arc tube contains metal halide compounds to improve colour appearance and increase luminous efficacy. Phosphor coating on the inside of the outer bulb produces a warmer colour temperature and improves colour rendering.
