Plastic-Coated, Shatter-Resistant
Metal Halide Lamps

Standard & High Output Metal HalidesShat-R-Shield now offers plastic-coated, shatter-resistant metal halide lamps.   These lamps are the safest, most efficient source of pure white light available.  The entire line is designed to be safely used in open fixtures.  Besides offering greater flexibility in system design, open fixtures tend to be less expensive, are more compact, and are often more attractive than enclosed fixtures.  The lenses on enclosed fixtures reduce light output by up to 10%, and this light loss can be compounded over time by build-up of dirt, grime and insects on the lens.  For lamps that are used in high ceiling fixtures, a common metal halide application,
the cost of routine maintenance and lamp replacement of enclosed fixtures is often prohibitive.

Energy-Saving Lamps
In addition to standard, high output and shrouded lamps, Shat-R-Shield also offers the cost-saving advantages of energy          saving lamps.  Our 360-watt lamps cost more than traditional 400-watt metal halides, however, the 360 can be used in          standard 400-watt fixtures, will deliver nearly the same lumens as the 400 lamp (97% lumens) and save you 40-watts in          energy usage.  Over the 20,000 hour average rated life of the lamp, the 360-watt lamp can save $80 in operating cost.

Pulse Start Lamps
These lamps are newly designed and require an external ignitor.   The pulse start advantages include a more transparent arc tube over life yielding less color shift and higher lumen maintenance.  Their hot restrike time is 5-7 minutes compared to 10-12 minutes for standard lamps.

Self-Extinguishing Lamps
These lamps are designed to self-extinguish if the outer bulb is broken, to prevent long term exposure to UV emissions          from the lamp if it continues to burn.   The lamps are recommended and sometimes required for used in schools, sports          facilities and other places of public assembly where the lamps may be subject to breakage by external objects.

Metal Halides with Protective ShroudProtective Shrouded Lamps
The combination of Shat-R-Shield's shatter-resistant coating on a protective shroud lamp offers the greatest possible protection on the market.  On rare occasion metal halide lamps can suffer "non-passive failure" (arc tube rupture).   This is possible no matter which lamp manufacturer you choose.  Non-passive failure (arc tube rupture) is more common with lamps that are NOT burned vertically and in 175 and 250-watt metal halide lamps.  Generally arc tube rupture can happen at the lamp's end-of-life (EOL) and for this reason all manufacturers recommend that metal halide lamps be shut off at least once a week for 15 minutes.  The arc tube operates at high pressure (up to 50 p.s.i.) and at very high temperatures and can unexpectedly rupture due to internal causes or external factors such as ballast failure or misapplication.  An arc-tube rupture can result in discharge of extremely hot quartz particles (as high as 1832°F, 1000°C).

Shat-R-Shield Protective Shroud Lamps contain a special quartz shield which was designed to contain a ruptured arc tube and thereby minimize the risks.  An additional benefit with the quartz shroud is that, combined with the thicker glass bulb wall, UV emissions from the lamp are reduced by over 70%.
