What is S.A.D.?
(Seasonal affective disorder)
As the seasons change, so does the amount of light we receive. Between September and May some people experience the "Winter Blues".
How Does Light Therapy Help?
Research has proven that light therapy can be an effective remedy for people who suffer from S.A.D.'s and certain sleep disorders. Current theory is light, when it hits the back of your eyes, produces an electro-chemical signal that goes to the brain, which in turn produces the neuro-transmitter serotonin. The amount of serotonin in the brain effects your mood, appetite and sleep.
To supplement the lack of light during the winter months special high intensity light boxes, are used to simulate sunlight equal to a springtime sunrise, which is up to 20 times more light intensity than traditional indoor lighting.
How To Use
High intensity light boxes are not a listed medical device. We recommend that you consult your physician before using light therapy.
Usually they will recommend 15 to 30 minute treatments first thing in the morning. Do not look directly into the light but glance at it occasionally. Reading, writing, eating or even putting on make-up can be some of the activities carried out during treatment. Marked improvement is usually apparent in less than 5 days.
